Digital Craft Volume 1
The goal of this project was to create a piece of art that is crafted digitally but requires at least some analog intervention by the artist. This is the first of a line of digitally crafted art pieces. Thanks to the FabLab for making my work finally come to life. Below you will see the steps.
Picture 1. Original photo
Picture 2. Live Trace in Illustrator, cleaned up to assure one continuous shape, offset path to 1.5 mm to account for the 3mm diameter of the drill bit.

Picture 3&4. Cnc milling with a 3mm flat end bit in 3 passes of 3.5mm depth in order to cut through the 1cm thick plywood. About 4 hours of milling.

Picture 5. The edges had to be cleaned up -- the best technique is just to use medium grit sandpaper (rather than an exacto knife which split the wood).

Picture 6,7,8. The handwork of the artist is continued. The plywood is mounted in final place with double stick tape. At this point, the artpiece does not read as desired until the front surface is painted black. Here you can see the progression.

Picture 9&10. The final work up close and with the surroundings.
