embroidered robots
For my collection that I showed last January during AIFW in club Trouw Amsterdam, I wanted to combine fine silk fabrics with Plexiglas shapes so that they created robotic-like people together.
these forms, we have cut with the GE Spirit Laser cutter
and it took us 2 full days working on it because of the small details that it has, so we had to put the laser at a relatively slow speed to go through the material for a proper cut.
we had 4 plates of 35x55 cm white Plexiglas and 4mm thick
first we made some tests to see on what speed and power he would cut the best;
attempt 1:
maximum power, speed 1: went not quite through the material
attempt 2:
maximum power, speed 0.8, the diagonal lines didn't go through because it goes relatively slower.
attempt 3:
maximum power, speed 0.5: well-cut, although in some places it was so hot that it melted a bit together again but you can easily push apart when you're done cutting the plate and get it out.
to use the plates in the most efficient way possible, we used the forms across the width of the plate put. to measure precisely that they do fall within it you can go into the file first and put two lines set on the extreme points and the laser switch but leave the valve open so it shows where these lines are on the plate, but it won't cut then.
We first cutted the inlines by indicating them black in the file and then the outlines were marked with red so you can determine the order of cutting.
by doing first the inlines and then the outlines had to do the late shift it's more likely to cut everything as accurately as possible.
I also had a piece of leather I wanted to cut. this was leather with a plastic coating over it. unfortunately I have not been able to do this without cutting fire lines for now. That needs more practice for next time.
I finally got my collection the following things cut;
-2 Pair of blinkers
-3 Chains
-1 Shoulder thorax forms that goes with a silk top
-1 Corset-like garment entirely of plexiglass
-1 Shoulder piece for in a silk top
