Slight (WIP)
My fablab moment started with the this design for Philips Lumiblade. Lumiblade is the bussiness unit where Philips is working on the development of organic LED. (thin layer of emitted substance between glass, total: 2mm)

I contacted Philips and presented them a collectio of design in Aachen (DE).
I could make my designs with new technology, and they could present my designs to promote their product (mas o menos).
The slight (image above) was bought for their permanent exposition at their creative lab, and hopefully Milan next April.
I started collecting wood and tried to cut and dry it. This was the hardest part, while there's always more water on the outside then on the inside. The best drying technique was with the microwave, 1min on max. lever and then 5min in freezer. (50% with no cracks!)
While the pieces where so cracked or deformed i had to flatten them out. Normal machinery can only do this in the length direction of the wood, not throught the cross section like mine.
So i decided to do it with CNC cutting on the shopbot @ fablab Amsterdam.

Here you see a close up of the first slice i've done. The burning is because the rotation speed was to high! (max 8 for wallnut).
The most importent thing i learned; You always need 1 flat surface to begin with... else you will never get 2 flat surfaces. The other thing i learned; Rapid prototyping sounds rapid; but be patient!
I will post the results when it's done!
