‘The Spelfabriek’ facilitates game-based language learning. Pupils learn to build words by physically linking sounds together.De spelfabriek provides an accessible and intuitive gaming environment for learning language and meaning for children in the first year of primary school. In an explorative and playful way they develop their language skills using technologically enhanced interactive objects. The spelfabriek has the shape of a factory, as a metaphor for ‘producing’ words. Prototyping fulfilled an important role in the development of the spelfabriek. Several iterations of the concept have been materialized and tested with children and teachers. This post gives an overview of the make process of the final prototype. The object was made in the Fablab, by members of the GATE project team and the great help of our interns Alice and Mickael.
