Fab Prosthetics

Abstract
The major objective of prosthetics is to restore  the functional capacity formerly held by a limb deficient person as closely as possible, while attaining the best cosmetic result afforded to, and deemed necessary by the patient.

Short update

The project is continuing with a research into crucial information about the introduction of a new lower leg prosthesis. Besides information about the human gait, the physiological background and the medical needs, an analysis about all the problems was made. This analysis led to a specific design assignment.

OS 3D Scanner

An investigation into open source 3d scanning systems.
The goal is to develop a mobil 3d scanning system to be able to scan limbs in the field, in order to improve the quality of an under knee prosthetic.

Here is a stomp socket made with thermoplast. This is the most important part of the proshtetic, because halv the bodyweight has to be distributed along the lateral side of the stomp.

Prosthetics Program

This project is collaboration between Fablab Amsterdam,
Fablab India Netaji Subhas, New Delhi,
arctic MIT Fablab Norway.

The goal is to engineer a low cost prosthetic alignment laser (P.A.L) system that meets (almost) the specifications of ottobocks L.A.S.A.R system.
A cheap DIY kit made in a Fablab would allow prosthetic makers in developing countries
to have a professional tool to improve the alignment of limb prosthetics on their patients.

The collaboration consists of:

@ Bootcamp, Fablab Norway:
For the prosthetics program, I wanted to learn more about 3d scanning since one major improvment would be to have the ability to produce good 3d scans from limbs. These could then be send to another country with orthopedic specialisme to make the nessesary shape changes, send it back and it then can be milled out locally.

The next engine 3d scanner costs 3000$ and has HD hardware,

HONF - Prosthetics Workshop

made by:
HONF - Alex & Michael

DAY 1: Monday, 4 May 2009

We are collecting knowledge. Appie Rietveld http://www.kortermaarkrachtig.nl gave us a very nice introduction on prosthetic legs. He brought 3 different models with him which he is wearing him self. He gave us an inside into the world of amputees, the different technologies, the problems, the most important things on prosthetics etc.
